Beach Memories

This weekend we celebrated our ten year wedding anniversary as well as taking our annual trip to the beach. We try at least once a year to head over to Sunset Beach on the coast of NC. It is very small and quiet and perfect for families. One reason Sunset Beach is so unique is that it is rather difficult to get on to. They have a very old pontoon bridge or swing bridge that swings out every hour on the hour to let boats through. If you are lucky enough to be stopped in your car during that time, it can be a long wait indeed (as we were several times this weekend). Still, the kids enjoyed watching the bridge swing out and the boats pass through, so we will call it an educational stop. The other reason Sunset Beach is so unspoiled is that there is very little commercialism on the island. There are only two or three small hotels and no gas stations or pizza parlors. Mostly just beach homes and beautiful soft sand. Because it is a peninsula, you get a chance to see the sunset over the intercoastal waterway, making for some very lovely sunsets. Saturday we split our time spending most of the morning at the beach and then on to our favorite Calabash fish place, Ella's. After lunch we headed for an afternoon at the pool and then back to the beach to fly kites. Kite flying is a Davis family tradition and something we enjoy every time we go to the beach. Everyone, even the kids have their own kites and Mommy and Daddy have the big kites. Unfortunately this year there was not enough wind on the beach to keep the big kite up, but the kids kites flew great. So well in fact that we decided to introduce Micah into the fine art of kite flying. He got his own kite and was a natural. He kept it up around 20 feet in the air for about ten minutes. In true Davis fashion, he was able to eat a snack with one hand and still keep his kite flying in the other, a feat for any 21-month old. On Sunday we journeyed over to the next closest beach, Ocean Isle. Ocean Isle is bigger and you must cross a large and somewhat scary bridge to get on the island. It is still a great island for finding seashells and making sand castles. We stayed and played until the sun wore us down and we traveled back home. While vacation is always fun, and the beach is especially great, I am glad Jeff had Monday off so that we could rest and relax from our vacation!!
