Family Style Spring Break

The week after Easter was not only Spring Break, but also the first week of April.  Although this year you would never know it since all of April was colder than all of November!   To kick off Spring Break we joined the Jones family for a Biltmore invasion:)

While a bit chilly, all of the kids had a blast!

Elijah likes the view!

Sweet girls:)

Silly boys!

Because the Jones were engaged at this very spot, we thought it would be cute to "recreate" the moment.

Such a wonderful day spent with sweet friends.

Around the same time, Calla was invited to join her AIG (Academically/Intellectually Gifted) class for a science camp near Charleston SC.  For three days she studied marine biology and swamps and the ocean.

What made it even more fun was the fact that grandma came too.  My mom pictured far left, had a ball with all of the kids and learned a little something in the process.

April 3rd brought Noah's 9th birthday.  Where has the time gone!  Noah's only request that day...fishing.  We even found a great new park, Squirrel Lake Park in Matthews with the most wonderful pond, loaded with fish.

Back at home, we had a family dinner followed by, what else, cake.

Then we were off to the beach, where we were met with WAY lower than average temps and drizzly gloomy rain.  But in true Davis fashion, Jeff didn't let that ruin our trip.  Instead, we enjoyed a rare treat, visiting something other than the beach.

Since staying in the car was preferable to walking the brisk sandy dunes, we toured Fort Caswell on  Oak Island.

Fort Caswell was a series of defense structures built around the 1830's.  First used to defend against pirates, then as a base in the Civil War, an army training camp in WWI, an army base and submarine lookout post in WWII and finally a  Baptist Conference Center and Retreat.

The boys certainly seemed to enjoy the history lesson seen here in front of Civil War bunkers.

While a visit to the Oak Island lighthouse was definitely on our agenda, we even caught a glimpse of the Bald Head Island lighthouse as well through the trees.

The impressive Oak Island Lighthouse boasts 131 "ship" steps to the top!  Needless to say, we did not attempt it with 7 small children:)

From the island we went to our favorite little park in Ocean Isle for a game of tennis and to run off a little energy.

Finally, we finished up with a quick dip in the INDOOR pool.  The pool may look a little crowded but it was just our family:)

The next day we finally, got to walk the beach.  While not clear, it was certainly beautiful.

The next was even more beautiful, with blue skies and slightly higher temps.

Here's hoping for a warmer May!
